Chlamydia, just like the every other gram-negative bacterium will inflict an herx reaction when treated with antibiotics. Other symptoms of infections are nearly same as Lyme disease.

There are two species - chlamydia pneumoniae and chlamydia trachomatis. Not much difference between them, sometimes in Elisa tests they are treated as one. There are some other chlamydia species, but really rare. Both species are FAR more popular than Lyme. Chance to get chlamydiosis instead of lyme (and wrong diagnosis) is at least ten to one.

There is slight difference in symptoms depending on chlamydia species. Pneumoniae more often might strike lunges, while trachomatis might cause arthritis and limited eye damage. Generally, symptoms mighe be described as "Lyme symptoms", just not that dramatic. Both species do not affect central nervous system.

As I said before, usage of some antibiotics against chlamydiosis will cause the strong herx reaction. Major difference between the Chlamydia and Lyme herx is that Chlamydiosis one usually starts earlier and lasts shorter. Additionally, in Lyme herx symptoms slowly arise till an apogeum and then slowly drop, in Chlamydiosis - it starts with hard strike then drops day after.

At least half of "I diagnosed lyme myself" patients got chlamydiosis instead. Luckily it's not fatal mistake, as treatment in both diseases is very similar.

About the treatment - usually our white blood cells take care of chlamydia species before we even realize that something had happened. Antibiotics should play when our natural resistance is weakened - especially againt trachomatis. The doxycyclinum, azitromycynum, metronidazol - this's classic trio against heavy chlamydia infection. Diagnosis - a plain Elisa test should do the job.
